Laying It On The Line

Las Vegas gets record Dec. snowfall, 3.6 inches – Yahoo! News.

Yup, in the most extreme case of global warming that I’ve seen, Las Vegas has record amounts of snow on the Strip. Snow is caused by raising temperatures, isn’t it?

This Saturday global warming is going to affect us here in beautiful Belgrade, Montana. We’re expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow and -20F temps. Man I hate when it gets this warm in December. Just doesn’t feel like Christams when it’s like this.

Does anyone else think that UAW is completely useless and the root of most of the evil with the Big 3 in Detroit? How absurd is it that workers with only a high school diploma are making close to $100,000 a year? I have a couple friends with PhD’s in microbiology that don’t make anywhere close to that.

I understand why unions were necessary during the 1930′s and 40′s. Workers were treated as property and working conditions were atrocious. Corporations were darn near evil!! This is not the case in 2008 though. Now it is the unions that are the bad guys.

When will unions realize that you can’t get milk from a cow when the cow is dead? If UAW continues it’s ways, the Big 3 will die and the US auto industry will be run by corporations in Asia. Do you think barely educated blue collar workers will still be making six digit incomes working for Toyota, Honda, Nissan or B.M.W?

This week the US automakers went to Congress asking for money to help keep them afloat until they restructure. One of the concessions being sought by Congress was that “wages and benefits of U.A.W. members be competitive with lower rates at American plants run by foreign rivals — Toyota, Honda, Nissan and B.M.W.” Of course the response from the UAW was something akin to “Why are those meanies in Washington DC picking on us?”

I don’t blame the workers that are in UAW for the problems with their Union. I am a capitalist at heart and am fully behind an individuals right to get as much as they can. I do blame the UAW though. Through their greed they have caused a crisis in their industry.

There’s a reason the number of union members has steadily declined since 1970. Unions in this day and age are largely useless. Do you remember when union workers were looking for honest pay for an honest days work? Nope, neither do I.
