Seth Stoh’s Wednesday Post
Posted by Johnny under Sports thoughts
This is basically just to pick on Seth a little. He made a comment on country music that I felt was unfair. So, I emailed him. Check out his post on May 11th. Towards the bottom he has a review of last weeks American Idol competition that has the comment I’m referring to.
Here’s my response:
Seth-
Come on, you’re better than this:
” Just an awful song, particularly if you’re trying to showcase any vocal talent. But then again, country music is never really about vocal skill, is it? It’s generally more about in-breeding and watching CMT with the volume muted! ”
Now I realize country isn’t for everyone, but there is a lot of good music in the genre. Anything by the White Trash Chicks is horrible. That is a given. However, there are some fantastic artists out there. Chris LeDoux, Don Williams, Marty Robbins and Toby Keith.
Country music isn’t about sleeping with your uncle’s daughter, drinking moonshine and shooting the Easter bunny.
Most of the problem with country music is that all the current artists sound exactly the same. There isn’t very much originality anymore. (I feel this is the same with all the stuff on the pop charts as well). In my mind the music industry is pumping out “cookie cutter” singers. Every now and then someone will have a unique sound or style but as a whole these singers are few and far between.
Here are some songs that I think you should listen to. Maybe they will change your mind a little about country. I’m not trying to make you a fan, just trying to get you to be nicer to guys like me.
Baseball related:
I watched it on the radio - Lionel Cartwright
Cheap Seats - Alabama
Other:
This Cowboy’s Hat - Chris LeDoux
El Paso - Marty Robbins
Honky Tonk U - Toby Keith
Ace in the hole - George Strait
These should work. Maybe you’ll respect us country fans a little more if you hear some decent country.
John
Just giving you a playful dig Seth.
Anyway, only 5 more days until I head to the Mecca of Sin (Las Vegas). I am so looking forward to this. While there I’ll probably place a couple bets on the Twins winning the World Series and the Vikings winning the Super Bowl. Wouldn’t it be cool to win both?
Anyway, wish me luck.
